If you are like many Americans, you cringe at the thought of taking prescription or over the counter medication to heal your ailments. Many Americans are turning to holistic methods and vitamin supplements to help treat conditions from the common cold to burns. Prior to the invention of saline drops for dry eyes, every-day people turned to flaxseed. High in Omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseed has been known to help alleviate the discomfort from dry eyes after LASIK surgery. The prescription drug doxycycline has the same effect. If flaxseed can help with dry eyes, what other vitamins can help and improve your eyesight? This is what we questioned and set out to find!

Did you know that every day foods like hamburgers and sweet potatoes can give you a full dosage of vitamins you need for healthy eyesight? Vitamin A - known for improving vision at night - can be found in carrots, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, spinach, broccoli, eggs, most cheeses, and even butter. Another great vitamin - Vitamin B complex- can be found in pastas, whole grain and whole wheat breads, milk, mushrooms, tuna, nuts, avocados, bananas, and even liver. Vitamin B complex helps eyes sensitive to light and can even help reduce redness in the eyes.

If you need to improve weak eyes, aim for carotene found in carrots, broccoli, peas, and cabbage. Be careful with carrots, though, if you eat too many your hands may turn an interesting shade of orange. One glass of carrot juice daily can help improve weak eyes - even those eyes that need prescription glasses.

Other household items can help remedy the odd eye occurrences. If you have ever had a late night and wake up with swelled or puffy eyes, use green tea. Steep the tea for five minutes in hot water then let the tea bags and the solution cool down. There are two options: take the cooled tea bags and place them over your eyes for ten minutes - this option works well with chamomile tea as well; take the solution and dip cotton balls into the solution - then wipe it on your eyes several times a day. The green tea leaves have an enzyme that helps to reduce swelling.

Even people with prescription eyeglasses are affected by eyestrain. The easiest remedy is to take two slices of cucumber and place one slice over your left eye and the other slice over your right eye while your eyes are closed. Feel free to take a nap for 10 to 15 minutes. The cucumber's water content helps to cool and refresh the eyes. What about carbohydrates? A study done in July 2007 suggested that eating bad carbs like refined white flour can possibly increase your risk of developing macular degeneration - an age-related disease. However, taking Vitamins B6 and B12 along with folic acid can help reduce your risk for macular degeneration.

Getting back to flaxseed, it's important to remember that flaxseed cannot be absorbed into the body as the seed, it needs to be ground up and taken as two tablespoons in water then digested. A better option is to take flaxseed in liquid form but be sure to buy the cold-pressed version as to get all the benefits of the flaxseed itself. The capsulated form is also good but you would need to take three to six capsules a day to get the equivalent of one tablespoon of flaxseed oil.

Take this information and use it to your health! Bon apetite!
